Les origines écossaises se retrouvent par Leila Sutherland (1861-1935). Trois de ses grands-parents sont nés dans la paroisse de Kildonan, dans les Highlands. Ils étaient encore jeunes lorsqu’ils sont arrivés au Canada, dans les années 1810. A la fin des années 1830, ils ont pris le chemin de l’Iowa où ils y ont fondé Scotch Grove. Sarah Sinclair Bunn (1809-1876), la grand-mère maternelle de Leila Sutherland, avait aussi des origines écossaises mêlées à son sang anglais et amérindien : son grand-père maternel, William Sinclair (ca. 1766-1818), agent de la Compagnie de la Baie d’Hudson, était originaire des Orcades. Il faut aussi ajouter les ancêtres de Mary L. Espy (1833-1903), issue de familles presbytériennes irlando-écossaises installées en Pennsylvanie au 18e siècle. |
